British sport to get a welcome boost

National sport has been given a huge boost this week with the announcement that the Government is increasing its funding for the proposed new sports academy from £100 million to £160 million.

New plans for the academy have also been unveiled, which will include 12 regional centres of excellence, as well as sport medical centres. Eight of these centres will be set up in England, with the rest divided between Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. A decision as to the location of the new headquarters of the academy will be unveiled by the end of the year.

It is hoped that the centres will provide sportsmen and women with first class facilities, to enable them to train to the highest standard.
